Instructions for using Tin Lap

tinlap.jpg (11339 bytes)

With faceting machine off and tin lap mounted on the machine, do the following:

(1)  Put a small amount of 14,000 diamond powder on 4 places around the lap.

(2)  Put a small amount of Graves extender fluid on or next to the 4 powder areas.

(3)  Work the mixture around with your fingers in a circular motion until entire lap is covered - it will turn gray colored.

(4)  Take a flat piece of quartz and go over lap gently but firmly in the same circular motion.  This action charges the lap.  The first time lap is used is the only time you need to do this step.

(5)  If it looks like there is excess charge on the surface, gently wipe clean with a paper towel.  Lap is now ready to polish.

DO NOT USE WATER WHEN POLISHING WITH THIS LAP

When polishing action gets slow, first try adding more extender.   If that is not sufficient to get good polish action, add more powder and again work it in with your fingers.  Remember, too much diamond powder will result in the powder balling up and scratching, so always be more generous with the extender than diamond powder.  Be patient. It may take a few uses to get optimum polishing efficiency.

Clean lap after each use with some extender and a paper towel.   Store securely in a clean container to prevent contamination.
